Thread Title: "Jennings 9mm "accidentally" fires in Florida gun range?"
LAKELAND, Fla. — A Tampa couple and an Irish tourist were shot at a Lakeland gun range after a handgun accidentally fired. Polk County sheriff's deputies say it's not entirely clear how many times Michael and Sherri Thourot's 9mm accidentally went off (my emphasis) Saturday, or what caused the handgun to fire. The pistol was a Jennings make. The man in an adjacent stall, 29-year-old Gary Flynn, of Ireland, was most seriously injured. He underwent surgery after being hit in the shoulder and throat, and was listed in stable condition. Michael Thourot was shot in the left hand, and Sherri Thourot was hit in the left arm. Both were also listed in stable condition.

Your opinion on how this could happen?

More than likely a sear failure, the pistol ran all the rounds in the magazine. Real strange that the pistol could resume firing after being laid on the bench. JMHO from the info supplied. From the Lakeland news:"Detectives say the gun fired at least three times after Thourot set it down facing his wife, rather than downrange, which is considered a proper safety procedure. The gun began to spin, striking Flynn, who stood next to a bench a few feet away." Don't look like he was too swift to disregard safety like this,at my range they would have escorted him to the gate.

Could it be a case of anti gunners trying to get negative attention drawn to guns, shooting ranges, etc like the morons who try to sneak banned materials through airports and on planes to prove they can or either they are idiotic beyond comprehension or possibly all of the above.

Jennings is a piece of Junk. They are a manufactured disaster. No respectable gun shop should sell them.

Straightshot: i agree. Although i am not against them as a firearm, but against them as a consumer product disaster. Personally i`ve never seen one that functioned. There are a multitude of inexpensive firearms out there that work, the Hi-point come to mind, that satisfy that market. We should all speak out against this junk that will only fire the chambered round reliably and safely. axolotl

It's an epidemic of stupidity! It happended in MD this weekend, too:

Two women were shot at a Cecil County pistol range in what Natural Resources Police say was likely an accidental shooting.

Sgt. Art Windemuth says a Joppa man was teaching his two daughters how to use a 9mm handgun at the Elk Neck State Forest pistol range on Sunday when it discharged. He says the bullet struck man's 23-year-old daughter in the arm and a 27-year-old woman downrange in the leg.

The 27-year-old woman was flown to Shock Trauma in Baltimore and the 23-year-old was taken to Christiana Hospital.

Windemuth declined to release the names of the shooter and the two women and said he didn't have details on the women's conditions.

I just read a story of a Colt single action going full auto. It seems a property owner fired a shot into the ground in front of a trespasser and the gun went full auto and recoiled the four other shots up thru the guys body with fatal results. It seems the firing pin bushing had fallen out and when the gun was test fired at the police lab it did the same thing. The primers were coming out of the shell and recocking the gun. When the trigger was held down it emptied the cylinder. Moral of the story is always unload your gun before putting in down on the bench and do not fire a warning shot unless it is an aimed shot to center mass. Stan

I once had a Star model PS(45ACP) run a whole clip. The first shot was aimed down range and the other six went full auto-faulty sear.Good thing i had a two hand grip but it was still scary, never want to experience it again.A gunsmith friend was working on a Walther PP at his kitchen table, loaded a clip to go test it outside. On the way thru his den he held up the pistol and racked the slide,it ran all six shots thru the ceiling out the roof executing his ceiling fan on the way-it can happen.
